Artificial Intelligence, or AI, is like teaching computers to do things that usually require human thinking. Imagine teaching a computer to recognize faces in photos, understand what people are saying, or solve problems – that’s AI!
Just like you learn from examples and practice, AI systems learn from lots of information we give them. For instance, to teach AI to recognize cats, we show it thousands of cat pictures. Over time, it learns to spot cats in new pictures it’s never seen before.
There are different types of AI:
- Some AI can have conversations with you, like when you chat with a digital assistant
- Some AI can look at pictures and tell you what’s in them
- Some AI can help doctors spot illnesses in medical scans
- Some AI can even create art or write stories
But here’s something important to understand – while AI can do amazing things, it works differently from the human brain. AI doesn’t truly “think” or “feel” like we do. It’s more like a very sophisticated tool that helps humans do tasks more quickly and efficiently.
Think of AI as a helpful partner that can assist humans in doing things better, faster, or in new ways – whether that’s discovering new medicines, designing more efficient buildings, or helping students learn.

AI Ethics: Combating Algorithmic Bias
Artificial intelligence provides us with so many opportunities to enhance our quality of life, but as new applications of AI develop, Ayanna Howard reminds us that that opportunity comes with a responsibility to ensure that implicit and unconscious biases are not programmed into the algorithms.

Why AI Needs Your Unique Voice: A Message to Young Black Girls
When we create AI systems, they’re like mirrors of the people who build them. Just like how your favorite playlist reflects your unique taste in music, AI reflects the ideas and experiences of its creators. But here’s something important: right now, there aren’t enough Black women and girls helping to create these powerful tools that are shaping our future.
The Digital Divide 2.0: Why AI Literacy Matters for Our Children’s Future
In today’s rapidly evolving technological landscape, artificial intelligence isn’t just another passing trend – it’s becoming as fundamental as reading and writing. For our children, particularly those in underserved communities, understanding and leveraging AI tools will be crucial for their future success. Let’s explore what could happen if kids don’t develop AI literacy early on.
How Parents and Teachers Can Introduce Kids to AI
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer just a futuristic concept; it’s a part of our everyday lives, from virtual assistants like Siri and Alexa to recommendation systems on YouTube and Netflix. For kids, understanding AI is not just about staying current—it’s about preparing for a future where AI will play a critical role in shaping the world.
